Labeling Process Teaching
Throughout the labeling process trial on MS PCU, I have educated myself as well as keeping my co-workers well informed on the new process. I have spoken to staff at various unit staff meetings, one-on-one in-service and at QSA meetings. My educator, Amanda "Max" Swedhin, BSN, RN develops a unit specific newsletter with new information for the staff to be aware of. This newsletter is called "MS PCU 411". On June 27th, 2014 the newsletter had information about the new labeling policy using the "orange cards". This is an excellent way to communicate to new information to such a large unit such as MS PCU.
The following are emails, informational handouts and teaching tools that I sent and went over with to staff to inform them about the change in process, as well as a copy of the MS PCU 411 in which the labeling process was written up for the staffs and found on the unit share drive.

Below is the one-on-one in-service that I went over with the staff on the MS PCU individually to explain the changes in the labeling process. Questions were encouraged and answered at this time.
I presented this FOCUS-PDCA PowerPoint to the Quality Safety Advocate (QSA) committee meeting in April 2014.
The following is an email and excel spreadsheet with the month of June 2014's total number of specimen's that were collected being 5254. In this same month, the total of error that were reported were 4. This doesn't seem like a lot, but when you think of the consequences that can occur due to an error, this is 4 too many.
