Working at UCH which is a Magnet recognized facility gives nurses a large sense of autonomy as well as a variety of educational and growth opportunities. I came to UCH with a diverse nursing background that ranged from medical/surgical to telemetry to stepdown and ICU.
Shortly after beginning at UCH I was asked to begin precepting new employees and new graduate nurses. We also have nursing students in their complex care rotation on MS PCU. I have found myself able to use my knowledge and experience to educate others and assist in building their nursing skills and knowledge.
As I began my labeling project, I was able to keep my co-workers well informed of the changes that were occurring primarily through emails, unit staff meetings and one-on-one in-services.
In February 2014 I took part in editing and formatting the U-Learn Blood Administration PowerPoint this is an annual competency for all registered nurses.
In November and December 2013, I was a facilitator for the Skills Lab on MS PCU. I educated staff on 12 & 24 hour Chart Maintenance in EPIC.
I also have been recently involved in instructing Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) at UCH through the Professional Resources Department. This was an honor to be asked to do this and it has built my own confidence in emergency response while educating other on it as well.
Continuing education is essential to safe and effective nursing care. Caring for a critically ill individual cannot solely be learned at the bedside and does require a form of scholarly education. I consider continuing education a personal and professional responsibility. We owe it to our patients to keep up-to-date on current best practice and evidence based research.
I have not had as much time this year to be involved in community activities. Due to school requirements, this limited my time for other activities. One activity that I have been involved with for the past 2 years is Pink Vail. This is a benefit to bring awareness to breast cancer.
